How are our scales made?

All of our scales are produced using our proven manufacturing process. We use a specially made punch with different dyes to make our scales. We offer scales in over 15 materials, with many colors and finishes to choose from. Our scales come in five different sizes: tiny, small, medium, large and extra-large. In anodized aluminum we also offer a premium line of scales, which gives a different finish and anodized sides. In stainless steel we offer both regular stainless steel and blackened stainless finishes.

What can I make with scalemail scales?

Our scales can be used for many applications. One we are particularly proud of is our 2018 contribution of a scalemail shield on NASA’s Insight rover that went to Mars. Other examples are scalemail armor, scale clothing such as skirts, shirts and bikinis, and jewelry. Scales can also be used for home décor like wall hangings and table coverings.

Are scales safe in water?

Our anodized aluminum scales can be used in the ocean and chlorinated water with no issue. You’ll want to rinse them after use or they can get a coating that hinders their color and shine. As a side note, the anodizing on our scales and rings is FDA approved for usage in cookware.

Can I mix scalemail and chainmaille?

Yes! Scalemail and chainmaille look beautiful together and there are tons of ways to incorporate them in one project. For example, you can make a scalemail bra with a sheet of chainmaille hanging from the bottom for more coverage. Another example is a chainmaille skirt with individual scales hanging from the hem. Anything you can imagine you can do!

Can I make armor from your scales?

Certainly! You can make anything from pauldrons to a full suit of armor with our scales using the standard overlapping scalemail pattern. If you are making armor for SCA events you will need to check with your local chapter for their material requirements.
